Driving Instructor Training Courses

The ADI Qualifying Examination
The Approved Driving Instructors Qualifying examination consists of three parts, each taken on a separate occasion:

  • The written examination:
    100 multiple choice questions - 1½ hours.
  • The practical test of driving ability:
    A one-hour advanced driving test.
  • The practical test of teaching ability:
A one-hour assessment of your teaching ability (in car).

Tuition for part one covers all subjects listed in the DSA syllabus. Practical 'advanced' driver training is given for part two - this follows an initial assessment of current driving ability. Training for part three involves practical in-car sessions covering instructional techniques and practices.

The total number of training hours required to prepare for each part of the examination and the overall time required to qualify as a driving instructor will vary from person to person (G.D.A. recognises that each individual is different and requires specialist attention). Experience has shown that most students will require about 15 hours tuition, together with periods of 'home-study' and revision for part one. Most students will need approximately 8 hours in-car training (following a two-hour assessment) for part two. Part three will require 40 hours practical training (taken in 3 or 4 hour training sessions).

Partly Trained ADI Students

Specially Targeted Training
For whatever reason, some students find that they don't need a full training p
course. These students may have passed the part one or part two without
any training from an ADI and only need practical training for the remaining part's).

Some students find that, despite having received training (elsewhere), they
fail part of the qualifying examination.

Whatever your reason for seeking 'part training' the individual tuition offered by the G.D.A. 'approach will be of maximum benefit because it will be directed at your particular needs.

All 'part training' starts with an assessment to determine your exact requirements. Courses are tailored to fit your exact training requirements.

Courses for Qualified ADI's

Remedial Courses
These courses are aimed at ensuring that those ADI's who have been assessed as sub-standard on a DSA Check Test will meet the required standard when they are re-assessed. The normal duration of the course is one full day (with a minimum of four hours in one session).
Note: This time scale will be dependant on the instructor's current ability.

Update Courses
These courses are aimed at instructor's who qualified some time ago and who now wish to ensure that their instruction is in line with current techniques and practices. The duration of the course is usually one day.

Advanced Instructors Course
This course is designed to assist ADI's who are involved in, or wish to become involved in, the training and assessment of fully qualified drivers (such as company car drivers) who are taking a better driving course as part of their company training or who wish to take an advanced driving test. The normal duration of the course is two days.
